What is Joint Pain?
Joint pain is a common condition that results in discomfort during movement. The joints are connections between bones and can become painful due to various injuries and illnesses.
Symptoms of Joint Pain
Depending on the cause of joint pain, symptoms can include discomfort, irritated joints during movement and debilitating pain. Knee, shoulder and hip joints are three areas most commonly affected by joint pain.
Joint Pain Treatment Options
Your doctor may use an injection to remove fluid from the joint, inject a steroid or synthetic version of your natural joint fluid to reduce pain and discomfort.
Physical therapy may be recommended to help strengthen muscles around the joint, and improve stability and motion of the joint. This treatment may include hot and cold therapy, and exercises designed to manipulate the joint and surrounding area.
It’s recommended to ice the painful joint several times each day while at home. A physical therapist may also use this technique during sessions.
What are the Causes of Joint Pain?
Injuries such as sprains and strains can lead to joint pain and discomfort. Other causes include those related to illnesses, such as arthritis, gout and bursitis.
