What Is Neck Pain?

Neck pain is a common condition caused by a variety of factors. Strain, injury, pinched nerves and herniated disks are a few things that cause neck pain. People who sit in sedentary positions for long periods of time and those who are involved in contact sports are at higher risks of developing neck pain. The pain can range from a dull ache to shooting numbness down the shoulders and arms. Depending on the cause, location and severity of pain, different methods are used to treat neck pain.

Symptoms Of Neck Pain

Common symptoms of neck pain include tight muscles, spasms, headaches, inability to move head, and pain that increases when sitting in one position for extended periods of time. More severe symptoms may result in numbness, tingling or weakness that spreads from the neck to the shoulders and arms. Facial pain and back pain may also be associated with neck pain as it affects nerves and the spine.

Neck Pain Treatment Options

Physical Therapy

Physical therapy works to correct posture and alignment issues that may be causing neck pain. Other methods include exercises and stretches to help strengthen neck muscles. These exercises help increase the range of motion and flexibility of the neck while loosening muscles, which works to reduce stiffness and increase blood flow.

Steroid Injections

This neck pain management technique is designed to reduce inflammation and relive pain. It is a brief and non-surgical procedure that is used to treat chronic neck pain. It is used to treat inflammed nerves anywhere along the spine, including those that may lead to neck pain.

Medications and Muscle Relaxants

Muscle relaxers may be prescribed to treat temporary neck pain and help with muscle spasms. Other medications that reduce inflammation and swelling may be necessary to help treat neck pain. Neck pain caused by joint problems or osteoarthritis may be treated with over-the-counter medications, such as Tylenol.


Traction may be used as a form of neck pain management. It is the act of placing tension to stretch muscles and ligaments as the head is pulled away from the neck. It allows the neck muscles and pinched nerves to relax. Manual traction is performed by a physical therapist as they reposition the head in various ways to relieve pain. Muscle relaxers and heat packs may be used in addition to traction for better results.

What Causes Neck Pain?

Neck pain can be caused by poor posture from sitting at a desk for an extended period of time. Poor posture puts strain on neck muscles that leads to pain, soreness and stiffness. Other causes include overuse of neck muscles, which can result in strains, herniated disks and bone spurs putting pressure on nerves, and injuries caused by accidents. Osteoarthritis, a common form of arthritis, may also be the cause of neck pain. However, neck pain may be caused by a more serious issue if it is accompanied by pain radiating into your shoulder or arm.

Neck Pain Management Options

You can relieve neck pain caused by inflammation with ice packs. Applying cold packs within the first 24 hours of neck pain is the most ideal way to reduce inflammation. Heat may be applied to stimulate blood flow through use of a heating wrap or warm shower.

Strengthening exercises can help ease pain and reduce the risks of future neck pain. Gently working out and massaging the area helps increase blood flow which promotes healing. Recommended exercises allow your neck muscles to relax and counteract the constant tension that causes neck pain.

Neck collars are typically worn immediately after an injury. Neck collars limit the range of motion to prevent more injury. However, they should only be worn for a short period of time as preventing movement can cause other neck problems.
